Inaccurate Battery Reading

OK I unplugged my phone at lunch today and it was charged. Had it on a desk all afternoon with GPS, wifi, and the display turned off. It received about 20 emails, and 2 short phone calls. Oh and about a 12 minute game of spades. At 530 it notifies me that the battery is less than 5%. WTF?

So anyway I get home and plug it in, and once plugged it says "charging 70%"

Not sure which to believe here. If it was at 5% after just a few hours of sitting on a desk I've got a bad battery. But if the second aprt is accurate, why, and how do I fix it?

Common problem, not sure what causes it, you can search the forums for it and maybe someone has an answer, haven't had the problem so I'm not too worried about it yet.
