You will get charged at data rates. if you have an "unlimited" plan then you should be okay. Do a search for pdanet there are a lot of threads

PDANet acts like a pass-through. When you turn on USB debugging, it allows the software on your PC to interact with the app on the phone. In this case, it's passing 'net data through it out to the towers. It looks and acts no different on the network as if you were browsing the web on your phone or checking email, etc. etc.

i use pdanet all the time for wired and wireless tethering. after the 2 weeks or 30 days you have to purchase it. but if you are rooted there is so many other ways to get tethering, both wired and wireless. and you can make a wifi hotspot even on a D1 with the rooted versions.

Incorrect, After 30 Days you have to purchase to be able to access https: sites... But if you use it, support them by purchasing the app.

I leave auto updates off all the time. I get DSL speed when I hard wire tether on pdanet. Its pretty good.

I could never get it to work properly but I just use wireless tether now on my rooted X.

i tried using a friends wireless tether on his DX, and it was much slower than the speed i got on my D1 with pdanet.

from what i have been told. anytime you do a wireless tether you will get a slower speed. here is the links for the rooted user tether apps....
