How Are Market Apps Listed/Ranked?

    If you go to a category, what determines which app is listed first?
    If I skip to the tenth page am I looking at the dregs?

    Number of installs?
    Fee paid to Google?

    It's not ratings, nor price.

    Unlike eBay or Amazon you can't choose the sort criteria, can you?

    Not in the market itself, but you can use a site like AppBrain that will let you do a sort by most popular, best rated, newest, etc.

    Right, I am aware of appbrain...it's what led me here.
    No, I was just wondering what criteria Google uses and why they don't allow you to sort the results.
