Do you have to be rooted to get Froyo?

I tried doing a search before posting this question but I could not find anything that seemed relevant.

Here a lot of people have Froyo but I am not sure how to get it.

Interesting question. You basically do the same things you would do to get rooted. Even though you don't end up with root access on your phone you'd still be voiding your warranty.
