Can't get pipe with phys keyboard

I am new to android, but know linux fairly well. I am rooted and learning to use the terminal emulator. The problem I have is that I can't get pipe when the physical keyboard is out. Can anyone help me figure this out?

Like always I answer my own question.

Type ALT - SYM to get a choice of symbol chars. "|" is one of the symbols shown.

Unfortunately, this does not work on a standard Terminal. so I must use a soft keyboard for that.
Maybe installing a "Super"-Terminal would help.
