Deploying soon, and I have already gotten the unlock code from VZW so I can get a sim card when I get to Afghanistan. Will the alps that require data usage, like weather, social media, market, etc etc work on a foreign sim card?

You will need to add an APN with the settings for the operator the sim is from. Make sure you have the phone switched to GSM/UMTS mode. (Global mode is only if you use VZW's original SIM)

I leave for Afghan soon too. Any new word on a Verizon data plan? Last time I checked, it's $20. 48 per mb overseas. And for those that don't know, $2.38 a min with the International add-on, $0.50 to send a text, $0.05 to receive a text...

I have a Verizon Droid 2 Global in Afghanistan on the Roshan network. They offer data plans that are unreliable and EXPENSIVE. I just use it as a phone until I get within WiFi range. It is possible, but you're going to pay for it and it may not work, depending on which base/FOB you're at.
