yahoo mail app- please help!

i've been using the yahoo mail app since i've had my droid. no problems until today. window came up saying an update is available (1.4.0) and must be installed. can not use yahoo mail at all without installing this update, but updated is from a third party, not marketplace. anyone else experience this or have any suggestions?

I'm not sure what’s up with the mandatory update as well. Like mentioned, it's from a third party but it does work and has the new added features like the app says in the market place. I got the update to work but then deleted the app and re-installed to see what would happen. Even though the market says it's a new version which is v1.0.4, it installs the old one and then tells you need to do the mandatory update for it to work just like the first time I launched it yesterday. The big question is, even though the update works, is it safe??

Here is what else i know: If you have automatic updates checked it will automaticlly download the update, but it wont install inless you have the third party app thing checked (Droid 1) I used Astro to explore the file. and compared it to the current file. First they are a bunch more files. added a bunch of Samson stuff. the part that scares me is their is a file in it called Hack. and second it wants more promissions, more acess to the phone.

Looks like it was a legit update but it wasn’t launched correctly. I haven’t checked yet, but I guess it has been corrected.

So it's safe to say it was legit even though is was an incorrect update, correct? Also, I did remove the app with uninstall so it should be completely removed, correct?

Look, the difference between senior and newbie is ... I've been here longer and posted more. It doesn't mean I know more than you.

When you question if it is legit, I don't know. I'd like to think there is no malicious component in it. Man, you just have to be careful these days!

I would suggest to restore the backup if you have one. If you don't, ... maybe it's time to think about it and pray.

I backup mine periodically (weekly) and I keep a "seed" backup which I believe it is clean. Just a suggestion ...

Phone is a week old and am new to these smart phones. How does one restore the backup? Is this done automatically?

You should consider rooting the phone then. There are a lot of benefits. For one, nandroid allows you to back up the entire phone. You can return to when the backup was done when restoring it in the future. There are a lot of experts here, take a look at FAQ or its kind. If you have a droid, it's not complicated.

For the yahoo app, I think you should be fine. Either they are super smart, secretive so no one finds out what happened in the app, or there is nothing bad there. Just pay some extra attention to the phone activities in the next few days, .... that is what I would do.

I have a Droid X and it's a stock one. Can you point me in the right direction for a backup app or what ever I need to do?

I think the Yahoo app wasn’t corrupt seeing the response by Yahoo. Just in case, what would I need to keep an eye on?

The downside of rooting the phone include chances to screw it up in the rooting process (it still exists.), then followed by possibility of having a very time-consuming habit.

First off I would like to say thank you for your time. This phone is really new to me and have alot more to learn. With that, maybe I would look to rooting the phone in the future when I get more comfortable with it. Just on side note, I re-installed yahoo and it works great.

One other question is, when you delete and app off your phone is all of its parts deleted or just the icon?

I can only speak for D1, in which menu->settings->applications, some can be seen under "All applications". There you can uninstall one. If it is the same or similar in X, yes, you've removed it.

If you drag the app from one of the home screens and throw it into the trash bin, no, you just remove it from the home screen, it's still in the app.
