Xiaomi, once the top dog in the Chinese smarphone market has slipped all the way down to fifth place behind Oppo, Huawei, Vivo and even Apple. Devices by Xiaomi have been top quality over the past few years and have become popular in thanks to their very low prices. They have even said that they don't profit off most of their phones. They sell them virtually at cost in order to get you tied into their services and eco system.
In an attempt to maintain growth Xiaomi is planning to release a phone powered by their very own custom processor. The phone featuring the Pinceone SOC should be ready for release as early as next month. Being able to produce their own chips will make them less susceptible to supply chain disruptions. The demand for a new chip like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 by Samsung has meant that Qualcomm is unable to meet demand for everyone else and has forced companies like LG to release phones with older chip sets. Xiaomi could avoid this type of situation by producing their own chips. In the long run this is a very smart move. It is something that Huawei is already doing and doing well. Having your own in house developed chip also helps you to better optimize the software for your phone like Apple is able to do with iOS. Hopefully these chips will be able to hold their own against high performers like the Qualcomm Snapdragon series.
