WiFi Tether

Mercutio

Member
Can someone who's already received their Incredible tell us exactly how this fester works? Some items which I would love to know are:

1. Do you have to pay an extra fee and if so how much? Is there a max download allowance?

2. Can you password your network and if so which standards are supported?

3. If you had a rooted Moto Droid, how does the WiFi tether compare?

4. How are the speeds?

I know that I personally am all set to switch to the Incredible from the Droid, but want to know more about these details. As an iPad owner, this is pretty important.

im assuming if the wifi tether is anything like the wifi tether on the droid it will be free brcsuse you need to hack your phone. it will be password protected.

oh dear, verizon will cry whenever this beast gets rooted and we get the free goodness of it.

and you can't optimize the speed of it, tether runs only as fast as you 3g connection.

I truly hardly ever use my wireless or wired tether, BUT when I have an issue where internet is down or my hotel tries to make you pay for internet... well then it works pretty well and gets me where I need to go. I just do what I need to with it, not stream movies and such, haha.

I use it to play internet games on my school's laptops :p

and Mercutio, is that a Shakespeare reference?

Haha nice man. Doesn't that transfer a whole lot of data tho, and isn't that the only thing we should be worried about as far as tethering??

dont use to much data cause verizon can end your contract, make you pay an ETF(early termination fee), and suspend you from their service.

Really, they can't trace it, it's like, if you watched 10min of youtube, it's the equivalent to maybe three downloaded flash games. It's not much to worry about, and if verizon were to grill you about it, you can always blame it on pandora, slacker, last.fm, youtube, etc. I mean, you have unlimited data, why not flaunt it?

I think they slap you on the wrist at 5Gb, but really, who uses that much? (this is in a month's time, might I add)

i work for veizon and alot of people go over that 5 gig. its pretty crazy. if you have a droid root it and tether for free. if your getting an incredible wait till its rooted and tether for free. nk sense in paying an extra 30 a month for something you csn grt for free.

I doubt verizon would give you the boot. They love money. And you + time = money...

The thing is, if you chug their bandwidth, they're losing money.

Exactly which is why they have the extra $30/month charge if you tether. If i traveled a lot this would be worth it but i don't. In Vegas i pay $20 for 24 hours of internet or something like that. If i went to Vegas at least 3 times a month the Tether plan would work out for me but i don't so its just an added expense i don't need.

Which is why free tether > everything :D

PdaNet

PdaNet -- USB Tether/Bluetooth DUN for Android

I have not used this app as I am a soon to be new droid user awaiting the Incredible release.
I have not had a new phone in 4 years and I am currently using a Motorola E815.

I hacked my E815 so that I could use it for Dial Up Networking tethered to my laptop. This is the primary reason that I have kept this phone for so long. With the DUN hack I have been able to use my cell as a modem and connect to the internet with my laptop without Verizon catching on for years. Saving myself $60/month for wireless card..over the course of 4 years thats well over 2 grand.

This app with the Incredible should serve that purpose for me.

There is no rooting involved with this app. There is a 30day trial period with full access. After 30 days you will have restricted access to limited sites like your email. Looks like it costs a one time charge of $18. Seems like a lot for an app but when you think about what you're getting...it makes sense to me.
