WiFi and security -vs- carrier network

If I'm out someplace like at a bar where WiFi is available, I should refrain from using anything such as GMail where credentials have to be passed back and forth to the network correct? Is it correct to assume that the carrier's network is much more secure than an open WiFi connection?

Anything sent over an open wifi connection is easily viewable. Good luck turning gmail off on an android phone though.

Decent apps (like gmail) will only send credentials over an encrypted channel (i.e., SSL/TLS). So, you don't need to worry about that specific threat. There are other problems, though. For instance, a malicious wifi network could intercept unencrypted traffic, or redirect your browser to malicious web sites. I'd generally agree a cellular network should be more secure. I wouldn't quite avoid open wifi networks like the plague though.
