Widgets vs icons

I tend to prefer clicking on an icon to access the app I'm going to use, as opposed to interacting with it through a widget.

I do use some widgets, like the Fancy Widgets weather and time and the music player's widget, but those are about it.

I find many widgets don't update in real time and must be manually refreshed, defeating their purpose in my sight.

Do most here use widgets or icons and which widgets do you like best?

My widgets: Plume, Cloudskipper, Pandora, Soundhound, Smooth Calendar, Facebook. I never have an issue with them updating. i would open the app and check in its settings to see if the update interval can be changed.

Widgets on my phone: calendar, to-do list, weather, overclock, circle launcher

Widgets on my tablet: calendar, to-do list, plume, circle launcher

As you can probably see, I like widgets for things I just want to look at for quick info, and won't necessarily require any sort of interaction (other than checking completed tasks, or the like).
