Why such delays in texts?

So a family member has a Verizon Motorola from last year (not sure which one) and I have razr. When I send a text with pic sometimes it can take up to 12 hours for her to get it? Why? She can see what time I've sent it and then she sees what time it came through on her phone. Is it because I'm on 4G and she is 3G? She only lives about 30 minutes away from me.

Are you sure you not on Wifi when you send those MMS messages? Picture messages are not transmitted over WiFi, they will sit in your outbox until you get back to 3 or 4G, only then they will be pushed out. Same with receiving MMS.

I'm not sure that's true. I use my phone on wifi at my house all the time and my texts don't sit there. Texts go over the same network as the phone calls and not the data portion. That's why the data can lose connection and you can still make calls get texts.

This is correct. There are people out there with "dumb" phones that can send MMS without any kind of Data plan at all. Texting (including MMS) goes over the cell network, not the data network.

Texts, yes they do. MMS do not. Dumbphones are different.
Do a test, when you are on wifi, send a pic message, then go to messaging and see if it actually had been sent.

Well damn, I guess I learned something new today LOL!! If that's the case, I'd expect MMS to at least go over WiFi.

Yes, it's a pain. I keep a wifi toggle widget on my homescreen specifically for the picture messages.

This is why I love this forum. I did not know until I read this that MMS was different from text. Guess that explains why I get a message at home that someone has sent a photo, but it won't download.

MMS only come through if you are connected to the mobile data, not with fi. What complicates the matter further is that some phones, iPhone is one example, sends a text message to multiple recipients as an MMS, thus requiring a connection to mobile data.

I receive the MMS notification but it won't download until you connect to mobile data
