Gingerbread wont be coming to any of the Droid phones soon. My personal estimate (my guess is as good as yours) is that we'll start getting gingerbread in late feb/early march.
Even for rooted users it probably won't come any sooner. Every stable rom out for the d2 is built off of a motorola build. This is because of the locked bootloader which essentially prevents aosp to run well on the new wave of motorola phones. Unless the bootloader miraculously gets unlocked, i don't anticipate seeing any stable gingerbread ports for the new motorola droids any time soon.
Droid 1 users have unstable builds, but cyanogenmod 7 base code (gingerbread) is all ready to be compiled. The next D2 ROMs will all be Gingerbread. Same with the D2G.
Non-rooted phones will start seeing updates in late january at the earliest I'd the best estimate I've seen yet, if optimistic.
This came from my brain by way of my finger and my phone. Don't ask where any of them have been. Especially the brain.
