Volume control

With my old droid, I could modify the volume with the rocker keys without "opening" my home screen. Now, I have the Droid Ultra and it doesn't work that way. Am I missing a simple modification where I can adjust the volume without going "active"??

Not that I know of. I just tried on my Droid 4 and the volume cannot be changed unless the screen is unlocked.
