It's tough for us to imagine that it will be very effective in a smartphone, but Vivo just announced their X5 Pro smartphone will come with a retinal scanner for security. It's interesting to note that this is not the first Android device to sport such technology. The ZTE Grand S3 holds that distinction.
Neither of these devices are likely coming to the US anytime soon, so there's little way to find out how effective the eyeball camera really is at differentiating your iris from another person or a picture. Still, it's interesting to see OEMs trying to implement this even if it turns out to be a gimmick for now. For interest's sale, here are more specs for the X5 Pro:
- Snapdragon 615 SoC
- 3GB of RAM
- 6-inch display with 2.5D curved glass
- 3200-3500mAh battery
