Yeah, no one really knows what they were thinking when they did that.

If it bothers you that much, switch to Handcent or Chomp.

On that note. If I were to get Chomp or Handcent, is there a way to make them my default SMS program. I had Handcent for a while but I was getting double notifications, one from handcent and the other from the default HTC program. It really seemed to slow the process down a lot. I did have Handcent to send out by default but couldn't figure out how to turn off the HTC notification for SMS. Thanks for the help.

once you install handcent or chomp, go into the stock sms app and disable notifications. That will take care of your double notifications.
