I had rooted my 2.2 incredible with Unrevoked. To (finally) deal with the November update nag I unrooted. This has taken me back to 2.1.
All my apps are gone (no biggie, I can restore those).
The phone doesn't believe that updates are available. How to I get back to 2.2 (or on to 2.3)? Once I'm there assume that I can re-root.
(BTW, the <dial *#*#checkin#*#*> doesn't work. It just gets me "number can't be completed..." message.)
