Unlocked bootloader what?

With nenolod's recent shenanigans of the unlocked bootloader, it got me wondering what a custom kernal acually does? I have the D2, rooted, and running Liberty...everythings smooth as butter(at least much better than stock). If the bootloader was unlocked, what could the devs do with the D2 or DX? Would it be faster, smoother, brighter, or maybe get me some #tigerblood?
