Unable to answer calls when phone is locked

I have my phone setup to require the unlock pattern. The problem I have is that when I get a call the phone stays locked - I have to push the power button to turn the screen on - then unlock the phone to answer the call. Obviously this is annoying. I searched for a solution but I couldn't find one
