two led indicator lights?

It appears that there are 2 LED indicator light on the front panel of the Droid. There is one clearly visible (toward the top on the right) and one that you can't see unless it's alerting you of a message (a little lower and to the far right). The one that is obvious never seems to do anything when the elusive one is the one that lights up when a message is waiting. What is the one toward the top for? Is it not an indicator light and is some kind of sensor instead?

Sensor. The phone has a proximity sensor, magnetic sensor, and light sensor, along with the LED indicator.

my guess is its the light sensor!
