Turn off wallpaper?

Is it possible to not use any wallpaper, i.e. just have a black background like the apps pages have?

Make an all black image and set it as wallpaper.

I don't believe so. You would need to create a black wallpaper and then use that. There are several apps that let you create a custom wall paper.
