To root, or not to root?

I had and original motorola OG droid a few years ago and shortly after getting it it rooted it. After using it rooted for a fee years the phone started lagging really bad and having TONS of FC issues. When i would do a factory reset it would seem better for the first week or 2 then it would be back to running like crap again. I just recently got a droid razr and was thinking about rooting it. I thought i read somewhere that rooting it makes the phone much more susceptible it getting viruses and such, and i dony want my new razr to end up like my OG droid. And the razr has such a fast processor anyway that overclocking the cpu doesnt really interest me that much anymore. I guezs basicallu what i want to know is if u guys think the performance issues my old phone had was partially caused by being rooted for so long or if it maybe just got old and worn out and that it woukd have been like that weather i rooted it or not.

The slowdown wasn't caused from rooting. It's usually caused by having too many apps installed that run in the background chewing up ram. The wipe helps because it clears out all those apps. Then after a well or two you have gotten everything back installed setup and using ram.

They were a lot of tweaks and roms that did a good job managing this. My og droid was speedy up until i got my nexus.

I love being rooted flashing custom roms tweaks and customization. Not to mention my favorite no ads. There are tons of things to do once rooted. Just look around the forums here.

My OG droid would be sliw, then i would factory reset it, and i would only install a few apps that i really used, nowhere near as many apps as i had originally, and it would still go back 2 being super slow

Im not sure really. Were you on the stock rom? Rooting is simply giving "admin" privileges. It won't effect performance, it will however allow you to install things that can change performance usually for the better.

Congrats on the Razr! I don't think rooting makes it likely to get viruses but it is more likely if you download unknown apps and such from the internet... Always when downloading & installing items, you should be sure it is from a trusted source.

Fully agree you will be fine as long as you're careful.

I'm no HTML guru

Sorry... despite my fumbling, back up one page and you'll find the Sticky in this Razr forum.
I'll work on fixing links later. My bad.

Is there a way to do nandroid backups or something similar for the razr yet? Thats why i havent rooted yet cuz last time i looked you could root the phone, and flash custom roms, but if something went wrong u were screwed. Whats the best way to flash roms safely?
