Is performing a batch backup of "user apps and data" the same as what you guys call nandroid backup?

I am going to flash a new rom and don't want to loose all my apps

nope but what you want to do, Titanium is what you want to use. link 2 in my sig will help you learn more of the terminology.

Simply put, a nandroid is a system image at a point in time. Kind of like a windows restore point.

i see. thank you so much, so would the app/data backup, be the way to go to restore the apps?

just redownload titanium on the new rom and run a batch restore. only restore user apps (no system data, causes problems) and you should be where you left off.
