The Pixel and Pixel XL actually have an LED notification light. The light is not enabled by default. Like the option for battery percentage the option for the LED notification is buried. To enable it just go to settings, then notifications, then tap the gear icon, then toggle on the pulse notification light. It's that easy and now you will be able to see when notifications hit your device.

I wouldn't call it buried or hidden. No different than my 2 1/2 year old S5 which has both features but they aren't enabled out of the box. Why would they automatically enable every feature a device has, that doesn't make much sense imo.
