Thunderbolt crashes when any rom is flashed other than stock

A friend of mine has an htc thunderbolt that i am helping him with rooting and installing a custom rom. I rooted the phone fine, but every time i flash a rom other than the stock rom the launcher crashes uncontrollably upon booting and the phone is unusable. Any idea what would cause this to happen?

Are you wiping and formatting data system cache?

Yes, wiped both cache's and formatted multiple times before flashing.
