Things to do with your DROID that no longer has service/data/etc.

Couldn't find a good topic on this - but, my work just gave me a free iPhone (ugh) so I felt silly for paying for my droid when I can do everything from the Iphone. I have the Razr Maxx, and my discussion here is, what are some good/useful things I can still do with this powerful small computer even though it will not have any services? Can it still do GPS? I'm assuming all of the features will still work with WiFi, but not sure about if it will still let me download apps over that or not.

Or, should I just sell it, and if that's the case, is there a good site to do that at where I could get a good chunk of change back? Thanks for your thoughts!

If it's a razr maxx, i'd sell it.. Android. Net our sister site has an area for selling.. There's also swappa, Craigslist.. Some people try to act sketchy when buying and selling on Craigslist though...

But there's an app you can download and you can make calls over wifi, use the phone for an mp3 player or for gaming..

Its really up to you...

Or keep it, incase your iPhone doesn't just work..

Talkatone is the app for calls and texts over data/WiFi. :)

Will it still let me download apps like that even if I have no data plan or phone number associated with the phone anymore?

And... if I sold it, how much could I probably get for it? It's in like new condition, just a few dings.

As long as you have WiFi then yea you can download apps. It require a free Google voice account to use, but otherwise that's it.

Not sure how much you could get, someone else may know better. :)

I use my Incredible 1 as a music player with Power Amp.
I use Tablet Talk with it set as a tablet to text/call over WiFi or Bluetooth.
I got an app called Network to turn off the cdma/evdo radios for better battery life.
I've not had any problems getting new apps or updating existing on the Play Store without Google voice .
GPS works fine with Wi-Fi and an app called Nav Free USA is like Maps offline on steroids, eliminating most needs to update while in route.

I do this with my n7 as well. But of you are hooked to a home wifi. First establish a gv number. Then download groove ip and now your cell phone has new life as a phone...and for me I have a n7 tablet phone. To cut down on echo using a good headset with a mic seems to help. So yes you can use your old cell phone as a house phone or a business line.

Thanks for the suggestions. So, I would NOT be able to navigate with google maps once I lose this phone though? Obviously Garmin GPS doesn't have a data connection but still works. I'll have to try out that free one unless someone else has some suggestions on how to make google maps work with it cuz that one is pretty bad arse

Maps will let you pre cache maps but Nav Free doesn't need a data signal to start a search and pre cache.

thanks guys, these are all helpful.

Heres my last though... Is there a way to get the droid to use the data from my iPhone somehow? They gave me unlimited data on it. I'm sure the iPhone would never let us use it as a hotspot though knowing the way they run things

I put 30gb music on my old droid x and I constantly Bluetooth music to my Bose speaker. Also, when I'm on Wi-Fi, I connect to the app store and can still update and/or download just about anything.

My old Droid X is now a dedicated alarm clock that's always docked...it lasts over two weeks on one charge in airplane mode.

But if you've got a Razr Maxx, I'd sell it. It's still got some pretty good resale value...if it's in good condition you could probably get around $250 for it on swappa.
