the new swype

hi i have an unrooted droid (moto) phone do i need to be rooted to install? i have dled the apk to computer and it is my understanding that i need to dl an app installer from the market place which i did but it didn't find any apps on my sd card (i put it in a folder called swype) and then this particular app installer fc 4 times, so i uninstalled, will installing an apk brick my phone?

if i can install apks what is the best way to do it? thanks!

What installer did you get? I use Astro.
