The icons are placed too far apart wasting space!

Why can't DROID put the icons close to each other? Or even at my will rather
than have them stick to the a very large box wasting valuable space on the screen.

First, DROID only has 3 screens! How stupid? The cheaper android phones like
HTC can have 9 screens and DROID only 3? Even that with such restriction?
I can't put enough icons/shortcuts.

i dont see the need for more then 3 screens i have 80+ apps and dont even fully use 3 screens that came on the droid but dont worry about the screens the 2.1 update comming on jan 22 will give you 5 screens... if you want more then that there are several home replacements that offer 7+ screens

the spacing on the icons.... im sure there is a reason behind this as its not just the droid thats like that its all android based devices.

It has do do with the phone being able to display in both portrait and landscape views. Also, Android lets you put icons/Widgets that are bigger than the standard 1x1 on your desktop like 2x1, 2x2, etc.

Look up Home++ in the market app and you'll have the option for more than 3 screens.

Look up More Icons Free Widget in the market app and you'll have the option for smaller icons therefore fitting more in one space.

Agreed, there is a lot of wasted space in the stock Android GUI. Although this may be an issue with having to design a GUI that works on lots of devices with varying screen sizes and resolutions.

Still, might be worth while for the Android engineers to read up on some of Edward Tufte's work on efficient and effective graphical user interfaces.

Tufte did a nice critic on the iPhone UI when it first came out:
