Google released their own version of Facial Recognition way back on the Galaxy Nexus. It was a heavily embraced feature at first until people realized it could be tricked with a photo. It quickly became a feature that no one was willing to use just based on how insecure it is for someone to be able to unlock your phone with a photo.

Samsung announced a new revolutionary facial recognition feature for the S8. It seemed like this would be much more secure than Google's 3 year old face unlock feature, but it seems to be the exact same. During the presentation it seemed that the Galaxy S8 would be able to scan the 3D contours of your face and only unlock if your actual face was in front of the screen. The facial recognition has already been tested and works with a 2D photo. The good news is that there are many other more secure ways to unlock your Galaxy s8.
