The future of ROOTING?????

OK everyone my questions/thoughts obviously concern the thread title. I was thinking about the future of rooting the new phones that will come out this year. By rooting I mean the whole nine yards; cracked boot loader, super user access etc... the kind of access we currently have with the OG Droid. Maybe someone with more technical knowledge than me can chime in on this?? This past year since I got my Droid has been awesome when it comes to the explosion of development for ROMS and themes and Id really like to see that kind of accesability and imagination continue with the new generation of Android smart phones coming this year. Thoughts? Anyone??

Well considering the ongoing trend of manufacturers to lock their bootloaders the future isn't looking particularly bright. Yes many (though not all) will be broken the increased time to simply gain root access and/or crack the loader will effect the number of people and amount of time possible to develop custom ROMs. Combined with an even more fragmented market it's likely phones that are developed for with have far less choices. Not to mention with increased risks to the phone (in the case of Moto with their eFuse security) less users will likely be willing to try as well. Arguably though if Google gets off their a$$ and fixing obvious flaws in the system and (not that they ever will) force a 'vanilla' interface there might be less need for most users to root anyway.

It will probably never really get to that point imo.

The development support for the Droid 1 is huge and no other device has nearly the same support. Since it's running "vanilla" android, it's one of the easier phones to work on, like the Nexus One.

Rooting is never going to go away, my phone is rooted and i'm still running the stock ROM/kernal. I really like the stock ROM and HTC Sense, so I doubt i'll be flashing a rom anytime soon, but in terms of basic rooting with superuser permissions, we should be alright for the future.

Locked boot loaders will take awhile, but someone will figure them out eventually for each different model of phone

Hopefully the future of rooting will be good...first it was droid then N1 then NS...hopefully their will be another pure vanilla.

The best ways to ensure a good rooting future are 1) Root your phone. 2) Network with like-minded people. And 3) $upport the development community.
