Text to voice--how to turn on

I am sorry if this has been asked before but I was wondering how to turn on the text to voice so when I get a text message the phone will talk to me. I have looked on the phone and googled it but can not seem to fine out how to make this work.

Anyone with any ideas?

You don't need to be rooted to turn on text to speech:

Go to settings>accessibility
check accessibility, then check talk-back.
it should now work.

Thanks. I turned it on but now my system is at a crawl. I can no longer get into settings to turn it off. Nor can I turn the phone off. did a battery pull but still cannot get into settings to turn the stupid thing off

Did you make a backup before you turned on?
