Is there any way to set a specific ringtone or silence text for an individual contact?

Handcent can do this, though it is more of a complete sms replacement app.

more specific to your request would be ringo lite or whoisit beta.

I say try smspopup. doesnt replace the texting app but gives a sweet little popup of the message or not and you can customize ringtones for certain contacts and customize other things too, like the LED color reminder thingy. and its free 99.
