I've had this happen with both the stock Messaging AND Handcent (and no, I have turned off the auto-delete "feature").
Things will be nice and dandy for about a few weeks or so, and all of a sudden BAM! it crashes and I have to force close. When I re-open, the inbox is completely barren. This happens a LOT and two different Droids as well. I noticed on my SD card there are files named "com.handcent.nextsms-2.9.23.stack" and so on. are those backups of my inbox? I sure hope so...
