What you are likely encountering is the lack of multitouch support in the keyboard. If they fix that, you'll notice a lot faster typing.

Bingo. Really hope we see multi-touch enabled on this device!

The lack of multi-touch really slows down the typing experience. Its not so much that I'm not used to typing on the Droid (I really am pretty good at it) its that the phone can't keep up with my fingers which frustrates me. I have to slow down for the phone which is really unfortunate cause it would make the phone perfect if it had this.

I hope so too, don't see why they wouldn't add it to the browser and keyboard (or the entire phone's core apps) in a coming update. If not, hopefully a keyboard app will use it.
