Switching Droid to another carrier

I just got a new phone so my D1 is retired. Is is possible to give my friend the Droid and she can activate it on another carrier? She is with Metro PCS. I figured since they are both cdma, it shouldn't be a problem. If anybody knows, I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

I know certain phones can be used but it depends on the security of the phone/carrier itself whether it's possible and/or easy and/or without limitations.
