Strange things after update

Hi everyone. I'm brand new to the forum. My reason for posting is that since the update my wallpaper is extremely dark when the phone is locked and the backlighting on the buttons at the bottom are disturbingly bright. My sister-in-law has this phone also and noticed the same thing. What's the deal? Thanks!

The dark wallpaper when the phone is locked is normal. Wasn't it always that way? Maybe not, but I think this is the intended behavior.

According to Motorola, the bright button lights do little to wear down the battery. They are annoying though. If you root your phone you can change how bright they are.

It is normally a little darker, but now its so dark I can barely tell there's a photo there at all. It's almost completely black. Very weird. Also, I'm not super savvy on all this technical stuff. Could you explain the rooting thing? Thanks!
