Try turning off sd card sounds. In sound section of setup.

Try turning off notifications in the stock app. This way, if the Droid sound still happens we have a better idea if it's a phone setting issue.

No notification on the notification bar now. Just the sound.

Sorry... nothing really jumps out at me as being suspicious. With the notifications in the stock text messaging app disabled, does a notification still appear in the notification bar, or is just a sound produced?
