stock ota gb update wanna customize it

i am getting bored with the stock gb on my phone the battery life is terrible and i wana customize it to my needs i have never rooted a phone before or anything like that im a total newbeee with this i usually just upgraded to a new phone but i love my x and i wana make it the best it can be so which is the best way of customizing it? i know there are many ways u can go about it but whick way is the most stable and the least issues with the best battery life and so on and also once i customize it can i ever go back to stock setup again?

Any custom rom technically has better battery over stock. I'm on liberty gb .9 overclock 1.2 ultra low voltage and u can get 11+ hours of life. I'm at 30 percent with 15+ hours on a single charge. But it also depends on your phone usage. Each rom has their own battery tweaks. Apex and liberty seem too be the hot roms right now along with liquid.
