Sort contact list by last name?

I'd like to sort my contact list by last name. Ive found some chatter on a couple of forums that talk about exporting as a csv, importing into Exchange, editing column headings, sync to Gmail contacts .... big hassle. Those were late Nov 2009 posts. Any progress since then by Google?
