Soft key illumination

The three soft keys will light up for awhile and then I'll notice they are off. Is this timed to shut down? I'll even tun it off and turn it back on and they are not lite. Does ambient light affect them or does the phone have a glitch?

It only turns on in low light conditions and turns off when you lock the phone.
