Samsung Electronics reported a record quarterly profit on Friday and best-ever sales of high-end phones.
* Q4 operating profit up 73 pct y/y at 5.2 trln won vs 4.7 trln consensus
* Smartphone sales seen at record 35 mln in Q4 vs 28 mln in Q3
* One-off gains seen at more than 500 bln won-analysts
* Shares end down 1.4 pct after hitting record earlier in the week
This puts them ahead of Apple as the world's top smartphone maker. As HTC, Nokia and Blackberry struggle to get consumer interest it doesn't appear the South Korean company is slowing down anytime soon.
Samsung has traditionally seen its first-quarter profit drop from the fourth quarter, but profit will hold up well, reaching between 4.5 trillion won and 5.0 trillion won, with smartphone sales expected to rise further," said Song Jong-ho, an analyst at Daewoo Securities.
Samsung's Galaxy S series has quickly turned into "the Android phone to have." With the tremendous success of the Samsung Galaxy SII and rumor of the Galaxy SIII right around the corner 2012 looks to be just as good if not better. Nobody, with the exception of Samsung, has been able to generate a single brand name device in regards to Android. It could be argued that the Droid line is very successful but again in that scenario there still is not one standout device that has people anxiously awaiting year after year. It would be nice to see the other manufacturers step up with one rock star smartphone while continuing to introduce other high end smartphones into the market.
