Skype WiFi on HTC

Has anyone figured out how to make Skype Mobile for Android work on WiFi?

Skype + Wifi = Not Happening. 3G only.

I saw a suggestion to use Fring instead of Skype. I am trying it but it defaults to 3g calls. Is there a way to shut off the Verizon network in order to use WiFi? I tried the airplane mode but Fring did not like that.
