Skype problem

I use skype to talk to some of my friends but the version that comes pre installed will not work on wifi so I downloaded the skype app from the market to see if it will work but it just gets stuck at signing in. Is this a known problem or what?

Calls to US numbers go through Verizon, not skype. This is why you can't use wifi.
