Sign in error for Gmail pop up?

I have the Motorola Droid X2... My brother gave me this phone so I do not know much about it.

I keep getting a little orange triangle with an explanation point in it, on my pull down menu. It says "Sign in Error for ___________________@gmail.com"
This is my brothers gmail account, and he does not remember the password. I tried to remove his account but in order to do this, I would have to reset it to the factory default. And he said not to do that because he wants his music and pictures.

I also have my own gmail account on there so that I can use google play and download apps..... Any advice on how to get this error message to go away? I keep pressing clean and it still pops up. Its been this way for months.
Also, is there a way to get notifications when I recieve an email?

If your brother's account isn't the primary account on the phone...and I think you can change that...then it may be simply a matter of turning off gmail notifications or such.

Go into accounts and just remove that account.
