On the original droid, there were different types of widgets like direct message and direct call. Is there any way to get those on the d2 or any replacement?

Try the quick contact widget.

Nothing in the stock D1 as nice and simple and small as what the D1 had, unfortunately.

However, Launcher Pro Plus has a People widget that gives you access to all contact methods for any contact you have in it at one tap, and Dialer One has speed dial.
