sholesmod updater

great discussion here guys i agree with u both im a pctech...well self proclaimed pctech lol and ive seen to many ppl dl an app for the pc to overclock it just to fry if a cpl months down the road in some cases right away. and i feel the same aplys to sholes mod wich i use and love btw saved me alot of time but if it make u feel better i did root it months b4 i even new about this mod lol.
but u 2 seem to know how ppl arm it dont matter how many warnings they get if they want to do it they are going to do it anyways. well hope some1 who was thinking about doing this comes across this thread and maybe thinks twice about it b4 they do somthing that they dont know how to control. well you all hve a great day :D cya

I think Sholes has enough disclaimers that even a moron in a hurry will stop to think about whether they want to proceed. Since SMUpdater does not include or install SetCPU, it is then a second conscious decision to download to overclock. Once you've bought the gun and the bullets, it's up to you to distinguish the deer from the daughter.

I wouldn't have rooted without SMUpdater. Now that I am rooted, having an app that shows up in downloads as update available is a great way to get new rom builds. Flashing new builds is now about 15 more clicks than installing an app. Sure, initially the 497 page thread needed to exist because most of us had no experience with su or understood the option screens. But now you can throw your phone in the air and it lands rooted.

This is absolutely a wrong assessment. As you can see by my post count I have no life and I spend all of my free time searching and responding to threads on this forum.

We had 2-3 incidents yesterday alone where people installed Sholes with the updater and had NO IDEA what to do when something went wrong. But yet they still installed it despite being completely clueless.

TOTALLY TRUE M.

In addition to that, they tell you on the app page, the $5 is only a donation.

If you want the app NOW, and cant wait till it is back on the market, go to www.sholes.info and grab it for free.

Worth the $5 IMO.

Brick at your own risk.

I first rooted with Sholes, as I didn't want to be bothered with command prompts.... but after running into the issue that Sholes would not run stable at 1ghz I decided to try Bugless.... and it holds very stable at 1ghz.

Luckily, I had done enough research and reading long before I rooted using Sholes, that I understood what root does, how it works, etc... so I was able to troubleshoot any issue that came up.... like the reboot cycle when 1ghz wouldn't hold stable.

Do your homework people :)

I have to say both Matth3w and hookbill both have great points. I am one of the people who downloaded this app the day after it came out and probably wouldn't have rooted my phone without it, not because I didn't want to type a bunch of commands or spend the time researching what I was doing, to the contrary I spent a lot of time on this forum researching how to root my phone, I probably read Matth3w's guides 20 times each before I decided to root. The only thing that kept me from rooting was the shear number of posts where people thought they bricked their phone or had all kinds of problems after the fact. When the app came out, I thought this seem's idiot proof, so I read hacku's sticky about five times, and jumped in. It took fifteen minutes to root and install the ROM, and I had a one-year old crawling on me at the time. No problems with the install at all. As simple as it was there were still pages of people who had massive problems doing it.

If people would just do a little research they would save themselves a lot of problems. Some of the comments for the app on the market really make you shake your head. One guy wrote "what is this root thing and will it mess up my phone?" Are you frickin' kidding me??!! I think this is the type of person Matth3w is referring to. Your right if you don't know what it does don't do it. (The same reason I didn't install dropbear or openVPN, I read about each, still didn't know what they did or how they would benefit me so I didn't install them.)

I agree with hookbill that this is the easiest way to root your phone and it takes away the fear some of us had about rooting, but in my opinion you get what you deserve, and if you screw up your phone you (probably) deserve it. It is sad to see how many people come running here after they have problems. Luckily everyone still pitches in and helps them out instead of leaving them to blow in the wind, and that is really the best thing about this forum.

BTW rooting my phone, installing a custom ROM and overclocking to a conservative 800 MHz (on demand) was the best decision I ever made. It really was like getting a new phone!
