Severing ties from Apple

Hello everyone,

I am an iPhone 3GS user and my contract is coming to an end in June with AT&T. I am looking to change phones and carriers. I could really use some advice. I have never owned a droid, and I have been with AT&T for over 5 years.

I am looking for a phone that will excels in every aspect.

Thank you in advance to your help!

I would look art the incredible 2 Costco has them for 99.00 I have the OG Droid, I am holding out for the Droid 3.

I'd wait just a bit longer, the X2 is a decent phone, albeit still not the High End phone we've been waiting for.

Hopefully there will be some news about the Bionic/Targa soon, that would be the phone to wait for.

Bionic/Targa and the Galaxy S 2 are the brightest upcoming spots on our radar. I would watch for those. But they could be a little ways out.

Everyone wants to get the option that excels in every aspect whenever they're looking at whatever product out there (not just smartphones). That doesn't happen in reality. Reality requires compromise. If you max one aspect you affect one or more other aspects.

Anyway, you'll need to provide your specific needs/wants for meaningful recommendations. It's impossible to narrow down the list of options based on what you've provided. Have you selected a new carrier based on coverage where you need it first? That will narrow down your choices a bit as well.

You mention Droid -- are you set on Verizon or did you mean to say Android?

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume he wants a phone that performs well on a carrier that provides excellent coverage without him having to explicitly say that...

I would wait for the Bionic/Targa or the GS2 as mentioned earlier as well, but since your contract is ending in June waiting may not be an option...

Stay away from the TB though lol...

I'm confident that whatever I do end up getting, it will be an upgrade from the 3GS. I want something that will allow me to upload music, watch movies, and is versatile.

I am just a little nervous about breaking the apple stronghold.

Well, here is my $0.02...take it for what it is...

Forget all this "wait for so and so phone" BS. Yes, I said BS, and thats exactly what it is! I get so tired of hearing people ask "whats a good phone", and then the next 5-50 replies are from people telling the person to wait for the "insert rumored phone model", instead of just giving an honest, no BS answer.

The Targa, Bionic, Nexus whatever will all eventually come out, and yes, they will be awesome phones...for about 6 minutes until the next press release and the next set of rumored phones hit the wire. Dont believe me...look no further than the Thunderbolt. This phone was supposed to be a game changer since it has LTE...and already in this thread there is a recommendation to stay away from it..the "flag ship" LTE device on Verizon...

I buy my phones based on my simple criteria check list...
1) Do I think I can use it and not complain for 20 months
2) Does the fit and feel of the device actually appeal to me..is the build quality there?
3) Are the reviews of it honest or just "fanboy musings"?
4) What is the call clarity and reception reviews looking like. good/bad/2 soup cans and some string?
5) Will it last an entire day on the stock battery and no additional apps to have to use?

Using those checks, I purchased a DX back in August of last year...and I have been thrilled with it. It does everything I want it to do, things i dont know how to do, and it can be "dressed" anyway you like it with the abundance of themes and ROMS that are out for it. It simply is a great phone..and I am quite happy with it. I dont need some "super-techno-news junky" to tell me what I need in a phone, or that I need to wait to gets the newest piece of plastic and glass on the market...I just need a phone that does what its supposed to do...and thankfully, I got that in my DX.

As far as you OP...go to the Verizon store, pick up several comparable devices that are already in the Marketplace, and have a proven track record...stack their specs against that 3GS you are using, and then make a decision based on your personal needs...I am sure you can do this.

For reference, I would pick the X, DX2, Thunderbolt, and DINC2..with the DX being the oldest of the bunch, and go from there...Happy phone hunting...

Excellent post, I would add that another good thing about Android is that you don't need iTunes to copy files and music to your phone. I can browse mine like a flash drive, copy files etc. I know this is an irritant for everyone that I know that owns an iPhone. They are gated to iTunes.

I think you're speaking too generally though, for people waiting.

I've had the OG since the day it came out, even if I wanted the DX( and I didn't), I couldn't have gotten it.

You're seeing a lot of people saying wait, because we've already waited 2 years(or 20 months) for our next phone.

Those of us with the OG aren't going to just jump and buy a DX because it's a good phone now that we can upgrade, we're going to wait for the Bionic or it's equivalent.

You say phones are out dated within "6 minutes", while I don't entirely agree, there is some truth in that statement.

The fact is, telling someone not to wait for a superior phone, when we've already been waiting for our next upgrade I think is a disservice to the people.

The fact is the only phone that's been revealed being worth upgrading from the OG is the Bionic/Targa. The x1, x2, d2, d3 aren't worth the upgrade, they simply aren't.

You can say it's "bs" to wait for a phone with an unknown release date, but I say wait for an upgrade that actually matters. Wait for an upgrade that really changes the way you can interact with your phone.

I agree. The reason people say wait is because what's coming out in a couple of months is better then anything that's available now...i dont think it makes sense to tell someone to get a DX now, when there are better phones coming out. You're stuck with the phone for 20 months...the DX is already almost a year old and it's already EOL. If you wait a couple of months you get a phone that's leaps and bounds better...

I love my D1, but there's no way I would go and get a DX right now, just because I read that everyone loves it and it's a great phone.

See the problem with all this is that's exactly what people were saying about the TB before it came out. Just wait a couple of months. Well now we're saying just wait a couple of months again.

There is always going to be something new coming down the road. Just pick a phone and get it over with.

haha, this is true, but a couple of months ago, i probably would have been saying "get the TB" (given the hype it received). The point is, android phones come out all the time...i guess to me it doesnt make sense to get a year old phone when a new one will be out next month.

its not like iphone where the latest one may in fact be a year old. with android, the latest one might be a week old! we know the new phones will be subsidized as well so it's not like you're going to pay a crapload more if you're due for an upgrade by waiting.

it's like saying a 2012 car will be out next week for the same price as the year old 2011 car. sure you can get the 2011 and it'll be great and run great, but why wouldn't you just wait a week for the 2012, especially if its not going to cost you an arm and a leg more, and it has more features?

I just don't agree with that, and I think it's a false statement.

Had we done that, we'd all be stuck with the Thunderbolt and it's loads of problems. My brother just returned his because of the horrendous battery usage.

Plus, I wouldn't consider the Thunderbolt an equivalent to the Bionic/Targa anyways. I think that's where you're making the mistake. Saying that a better phone will be out in a matter of months after you buy yours is untrue, sure A phone will be out, but not a phone that's leaps and bounds better like the Bionic/Targa will be for day 1 OG buyers.

Even the Thunderbolt isn't leaps and bounds better than the OG, especially with the multitude of bugs.

I used to even believe it was futile to wait for new tech myself. I've been building computers for 15 years and I've always been an advocate of buying what will be enough for you and stop waiting.

Things are different right now with phones, they are changing rapidly and the difference between the OG and the Bionic/Targa is game changing.

It's not that I want to wait, it's that I have to wait.
