Setting email to only retireve new messages

Hello, and thanks in advance for reading this! Basically, I need to know if there's a way to 'limit' the email-retrieval to only retrieve emails that are new. I've heard that users can set the email to only retrieve emails that are, say, 3 days old and newer. I cannot find an option to do this ANYwhere...

I'm on Android 2.2.1, using the stock email program, which I know everyone says not to use, but K9 and a couple of other highly-recommended email programs I tried didn't work out, and the stock program works fine for me, except that it routinely retrieves emails that are, like, a month old... some of these emails have been deleted from my actual email inbox for weeks, yet STILL find their way into my Droid inbox.

Anyhow, sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for any help.

Is this the stock email app or stock gmail app? If it is the stock email app what type of email account is it accessing? I have mine synced with an exchange server and there is a setting under menu>account settings>"amount to synchronize".
Other email accounts may be different (not sure).
