Sending Text Msg Always creates "Group"

A few months ago, while using an app (Contact GroupU) that provided the ability to send a text message to multiple users at once, I did that: sent a message to 4 users.
Call the users 1, 2, 3, 4.
This created a "thread" in Handcent (or "Messaging") with the phone #'s for each of those contacts.
When I would send a message in that "thread" it would send the message to *all* contacts in that thread; as expected.

What was *not* expected was when I sent a message to "Contact 4" (as above) it "added" that message to the "thread" with all 4 users. Now, if I "reply" to that message (or if I receive one and reply) it sends the message to ALL 4 Contacts.

I tried uninstalling Contact GroupU (deleting all data)
I tried uninstalling Handcent (deleting all data)
I tried deleting *ALL* the contacts, and *only* creating Contact 4.
I tried deleting ALL SMS messages.

After trying all of the above...it *still* "combines" them all together into one thread (only once I removed the contacts, it just puts their phone#s in the heading, since the contact Name is gone).

Can someone tell me what I need to do to STOP this behavior?
It would not be a big deal, but I text with "Contact 4" quite a bit (he is one of my employees) and Contacts 1-3 don't even work for me anymore.

Thanks!
