How do you save text messages to sd card?

Depends on the text app you use. Im sure the search function would give you plenty of instant answer.

If you meant backup, just look it up on the market. Many apps do that.
With 8GB internal storage, I wouldn't be concerned I will run out of SMS storage space though.

I just use SMS Backup+. Syncs them with the phone linked gmail account. Also saves space for other things (like music) on the sd card =D
